Day 15 of our Advent Calendar Unexpected costs are a hot topic in construction. As long as you’ve specified your project correctly, As in included all the necessary information and build details prior to tendering and selecting your builder, it has to be these two areas: The ground - Groundwork’s is the area which you can blow your budget very early on. Footings and foundations can cost a lot more if they aren’t standard strip footings. My biggest piece of advice would be to dig trial holes, prior to starting and have a structural engineer inspect as part of your structural package. This will give you a good indication before you commit and reduce any nasty surprises! Structure on older properties - When renovating an older property which has stood for 100s of years you’d think it’s solid? It is until you start ripping it apart. You can loose £1,000s in unknown costs when doing a full renovation, lintels above windows and doors, rotten timbers, unsafe brickwork. My biggest advice is to account for everything, if something isn’t needed then it’s a win. #construction #architecture #design #building #interiordesign #renovation #contractor #engineering #home #realestate #concrete #constructionlife #builder #homedecor #interior #homeimprovement #civilengineering #architect #heavyequipment #homedesign #constructionsite #carpentry #tools #builders #roofing #house #electrician #work #homerenovation #business
