Well that’s ok to start but you still need to do your own research once you’ve found them. I’ve heard horror stories of a electrican being recommend by a friend, only to find out they aren’t qualified at all! Or a recommendation of a builder who actually did the job 20 years ago. Recommendations are great but do your homework as well, ask to speak to recent clients, if they are an electrician or plumber ask them about their qualifications. Ask about insurances and ask to see examples of their work. See if they are members of organisations such as the FMB. Look at their social media.
