'Sober socialising' - you're boring!? Yesterday, I met with an ex-HR Professional turned entrepreneur discussing business, strategy and growth. On a personal level she was taking a break from alcohol – the champagne culture - the bottomless brunch! As a self-confessed party girl, when out she is the life and soul. She has the willpower to start with (she struck me as being very driven) but was questioning how she would feel socialising without the crutch of alcohol, “this is how I lose my inhibitions, relax and have fun.” Initially it is challenging. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. Here’s my 7 helpful tips: - ✅ A ccountability partner – find a non-drinking partner, be joined at the hip if you need to! ✅ L augh - Engage in conversations, laughter, and activities to distract yourself from the presence of alcohol ✅ C onfidence - know your reasons why. Hangovers, anxiety, skin, energy levels, this is your base point when you feel uncomfortable ✅ O utbound communication - let your friends and those you're socialising with know in advance that you don't drink – and why. Good friends will be supportive – trust me ✅ H ome – why not be the designated driver? A helpful excuse in the early days and you can go home whenever you like ✅ O ptions - many places now have creative and tasty non-alcoholic beers and mocktails, the AF drink sector is really hotting up! ✅ L eave - Have an exit strategy: If you find yourself in a situation that becomes uncomfortable, have a plan to leave gracefully In all – have fun! Focus on the experience: shift your focus from alcohol to the social experience itself, enjoy! It's your social experiment. I have so many conversations like this, and I’ve been there, believe me it does get easier. As with most things in life practice makes perfect! The feeling the next morning with a clear head, no regrets, and a productive day ahead of you is amazing! Controlling alcohol is just the start.
