Built to Last? New Homes, Old Questions Property Quorum – Thursday 31st July at 10am We talk a lot about sustainable development. Carbon footprints, green credentials, energy efficiency. All important. Yet there’s a quieter piece of the puzzle that rarely gets the spotlight. Are the homes we’re building today actually built to last? This week on Property Quorum, we’re looking at what long-term sustainability really means once the scaffolding comes down. Because longevity isn't just about ticking the EPC boxes. It’s about whether the home still works - and still feels like home - in 30 or 40 years’ time. We’ve seen housebuilders celebrate speed, scale, and shiny new materials. That’s all well and good. Although speed doesn’t always mean strength, and new doesn’t always mean better. When repairs come quickly, when warranties fall short, or when modern materials begin to degrade, the cracks are more than just literal. So much of what we build today is designed to look good at the point of sale. Yet we rarely ask what it will look like after three winters, or whether the roof will still be sound by the time the mortgage is halfway paid. This week, we’re bringing those questions forward. Not to lay blame, yet to better understand what happens once the honeymoon ends. Who takes responsibility when design meets decay? Are we building legacy homes, or just starter shells? Joining host Gareth Wax and conveyancing collaborator Hamish McLay are three familiar voices to the Property Quorum audience: property lawyer Juliet Baboolal, experienced developer and investor Chris Gilsenan, and Michelle Carr, Quantity Surveyor and creator of 'Taking the Con out of Construction'. Together, they bring insight from multiple angles – and a shared awareness that building quality is more than just compliance. It would be good to understand how durability, repairability, and good design are being prioritised, if at all. And whether some new-build buyers are being sold the dream, only to inherit future problems. The podcast goes live on Thursday 31st July at 10am.
