🧠 Why “Don’t Think About a Blue Bus” Never Works! If I tell you ‘Don’t think about a blue bus’… what pops into your head? Exactly: a big, bright blue bus. That’s because our brain doesn’t process the ‘don’t’ very well. It focuses on the main image or idea — in this case, the bus — and serves it up on repeat. So, when we focus on what we don’t want (‘I don’t want to feel anxious’ / ‘I don’t want to be tired tomorrow’), our mind still paints a vivid picture of the unwanted thing… and our thoughts, feelings and actions start aligning with it. 💡 The trick? Flip the focus. Instead of ‘I don’t want to be nervous in my meeting’, try ‘I want to feel calm and confident in my meeting’. Instead of ‘I don’t want to be late’, try ‘I arrive on time and ready’. When you give your brain a clear, positive instruction, it knows what to aim for — and you’re far more likely to get there. What’s one ‘blue bus’ thought you could flip today? 🚍💙
