Early on Saturday morning, news broke about the escalation of the Iran conflict and the potential implications for the Middle East and global financial markets. The US had already announced weeks ago that it was deploying forces to the Gulf region, so the development wasnโt entirely unexpected, but the timing and scale have still created fresh uncertainty. Fast forward Monday and oil, gold prices have risen and stock markets have been down! Will this impact borrowing? In short, the answer is "Yes". Every conflict also has a financial cost. Geo-political issues can impact the risk appetite for lenders! If rates were to rise, you want to be protected. As always, we wonโt know for sure until the announcement. Last week we saw lenders reducing rates, yet this morning some products have already been withdrawn.
