Comments are the new currency. It’s 2am and you’re scrolling frantically. Trying to find that lost dopamine hit before bed. You could be immersed in cat videos or somebody excavating a labyrinth of bunkers under their 3 bed semi in some standard suburban street. All of a sudden a piece of content hits your screen that has you trying to laugh so hard that you wake the rest of the house. Maybe it’s not funny, maybe the person who created the content is so bizarre you feel compelled to consume more. You can’t be the only one who has seen this? Surely this is not real? Well for validation you open the comments section and bang! Hundreds if not thousands of people just like you are reacting. Some are even able to articulate exactly what you couldn’t put your finger on. Half the time the comments are stand-up comedians within their own right. The commentary can be better than the original content. I’ve noticed a trend amongst social media users that some people only need a 3 second hook and they’re straight to the comments. This hasn’t gone unnoticed either. Big socials are quietly and carefully recalibrating their algorithms. Soon your comments will become the new currency, the more impressions and engagement you get on your comments the more exposure you will receive online. Are you commenting enough on posts? How often do you check to see what others have shared?
