Is there really a perfect sleep routine? I love my sleep. Perfect sleep - it's a myth. Here's some of the more important things to consider when it comes to sleep. π€ The amount of sleep you have versus what your body needs π€ The quality of your sleep - restorative deep and REM sleep π€ Heart rate variability - variance between heartbeats π€ Your sleep efficiency - time in bed vs time asleep π€ Your respiratory rate - slow and steady is good These are really useful metrics to monitor the quality of your sleep. I use a Whoop band and use it to gauge against how I feel. It's a helpful guide and supports me making decisions regarding sleep and my activity. I encourage my clients to use the same. Here's the main metric I have an issue with - Consistency. Going to bed and waking at the same time every day. You want a life though surely? No late nights? No going out socially? There is another way to tackle this. View your week as a whole. Building naps into your world and sleeping habits. I appreciate not everyone can do this, however looking at your sleep cumulatively over a week is a healthy way to 'cut yourself some slack'. Make sure you get amount of sleep that you need over a week. Keep an eye on the quality. Listen to what your body is telling you. When I take naps personally the quality of that sleep is usually spot on. Leaving plenty of energy for the evening and days ahead. If you've got young kids - I feel your pain!!
