People wonder Why a generation give up on Buying Homes The ONS quietly dropped some numbers this week. Over the last 5 years: Mortgage interest payments: up 153% Stamp duty: up 226% Interest on debt: up 86% The cost of owning obligations has more than doubled in 5 years. And people wonder why a generation is giving up on buying. It's not laziness. It's not avocado toast. It's the hangover from the biggest monetary experiment in modern history. Central banks printed money on a scale never seen before. £895 billion in the UK alone. Near zero rates for over a decade. Then inflation arrived. Rates went up. Fast. And a first-time buyer in 2025 is paying the bill for decisions made before they even started saving. So what happens to those people? They rent. Every person who can't afford to buy still needs somewhere to live. Less supply. More demand. Higher rents. The people being priced out of buying are the same people being priced out of renting. That's not a landlord problem. That's the bill coming due for a decade of cheap money. (c) Jim Holland on Linkedin
