Last night estate agents got a whiff of their renters rights act moment. Plans have been drawn up to professionalise the estate agency sector with mandatory qualifications. It needs to happen. There are few too many estate agencies operating with horrific business models: poor training, low pay, high churn and a financial funnel that pays the owner more like a pyramid scheme for a conveyor belt of recruitment. You may have noticed this in your own town… never speaking to the same person about your transaction. The individual you initially dealt with has left within 6 months. Qualifications will immediately put pressure on the owners to pay their agents more. Insuring not only a higher standard but reallocating investment back into the people at the coal face. This will immediately have a knock on effect for customers as standards increase and agents feel a sense of worth and self respect for hoops they have to jump through to get a place at their desk. The long term effect will increase retention rates and build a better perception with the public for what agents actually do. I hope with a leadership contest about to take place for number 10, this won’t be immediately forgotten about.
