Quantum Expert Witness, or Quantity Surveyor. When a dispute lands on your desk, it is worth knowing the difference, because it is not simply a job title. Most Quantum Experts are highly experienced quantity surveyors. But the moment that role becomes an expert witness appointment, everything about the responsibility changes. A Quantity Surveyor exists to achieve the best commercial outcome for their client. That is the job, and there is nothing wrong with it. They advise, they negotiate, they advocate. A Quantum Expert Witness cannot do any of that. My duty in that role is to the tribunal, not the client paying the fee. I have to remain independent, consider evidence objectively, and present a balanced opinion, even where that includes information that works against the client who instructed me. Confuse the two, and you risk exactly the wrong kind of support at exactly the wrong moment in a dispute. I have written a full breakdown of where these roles genuinely differ, and why it matters far more than most people realise until they are already in a dispute.
